When selecting web hosting for your WordPress blog sites, make sure your candidates meet the 5 conditions:
1. Support WordPress
Some hostings tell you that they support WordPress, some wouldn’t mention it. But as long as they support PHP 4.2 or later and MySQL 3.23 or later, you can install WordPress with no problem.
2. Linux Based
WordPress works on both Linux and windows OS platform. Linux is usually more stabilized. If possible, choose a Linux hosting.
3. Apache mod_rewrite
Although both PHP and MySQL work Apache, Microsoft IIS, and LiteSpeed web servers, only Apache provides mod_rewrite which you’ll need for configuring permalink in .htaccess. Make sure the web hosting use Apache and have mod_rewrite turned on.
4. Support multiple addon domains
To make profitable blogging, sooner or later you’ll build multiple sites, - a network of blogging. You need the web hosting service to run multiple blogs with no additional cost.
5. Big monthly transfer
Think big. Your blogs will generate huge traffic. So that your hosting service must give you enough monthly transfer, otherwise your blogs may run out of bandwidth and died for the rest of the month.
Since WordPress puts contents in MySQL databases which don’t count for the the hosting storage. Blogs actually take very little disk space. Unless you run a photo blog, the storage space by web hosting is less important.
I switched my web hosting to HostMonster this month. It supports unlimitted addon domains, provides 3000 Gb monthly transfer, and of cause support WordPress. With a low price of $5.95/month, it’s my best choice.
I paid the same price for my previous web hosting, but got only 12Gb transfer and 800Mb. As my sites grow, I ran out of transfer limits a few times and had to pay extra to keep my web available.
Another way to select web hosting is to check WordPress recommendations.
As you see, the number 1 in WordPress list is BlueHost, a well known and trusted hosting service for internet businesses. But its price is higher than HostMonster.
What you may not know is, HostMonster is owned by some of the same owners, it is blueHost’s sister company but treated separately from a marketing point of view. For both HostMonster and blueHost, their clients are hosted on the same server systems, and are supported by the same team. The quality is the same, the only difference is, HostMonster is cheaper.
By the way, HostMonster gives a free domain, so that I don’t need to pay regristration fee for my domain name.
