Focus on Specific Topic with Consistent Content

Are you blogging for fun, for profits, or both? If you are blogging fun, you can write what so ever you want. If you are making your blog the profit machine, it’s another story.

Focus on specific topics is very important as Moxie told me based on his recent experience with his flex888 site, which is blogged on Rich Internet Applications specific to Adobe Flex. Because his blog is very specific on a popular niche, the traffic volume increases consistently, and the Google rank jumped from 2 to 7 in a short period of time.

Then recently he started to put all different type of contents, which were what he is interested, on the flex888 site, including some of unrelated topics such as health. It didn’t bring in more traffic, except one spur. It didn’t help grawing the feed subscriptions, kinda hurt. So this month he switched back and started to focus on the original content, just Flash, Flex and RIA related. Then the traffic start growing and subscription start growing too.

In the blogging world, what people are looking for is expertise and authority, which are presented and delivered by focused topics. Thus whatever topic you chose for your blog, keep the focus, and then one day you’ll become the authority. Once you are the authority, the profits follow for sure.

A link back to the sister site would be good too. I guess there are two types of blogs. Self serving and reader serving. To server reader while generating a bit of income you need care about what readers want to read.
