A Few Easy Ways to Improve Google AdSense Profitability

Google AdSense is one of the most popular tools to monetizing a blog site. Here are just a few easy tips to improve AdSense profitability.

1. Setup Alternate ads

By default, Google shows public service ads (PSAs) if no targeted ads are available. You don’t get paid for PSA clicks. Depending on your site topic, you may get quite some PSAs if you are on a narrow niche. In this case, you should setup alternate ads. When you create an AdSense script, you can select “Show non-Google ads from another URL ” in More Options. That’s where you setup alternate ads.

What you should do is to sign up couple affiliate programs such as one that from your web hosting, and pick up an affiliate link banner with similar size of your AdSense ads, and save the affiliate link code as a html file on you web. Then use the affiliate link file as the alternate ads URL for AdSense. Your AdSense code should have a line of code like:
google_alternate_ad_url = “http://www.richbase.com/ads/surefirew120×600.htm”;
Once you generated the AdSense script, you can add or modify the code directly.

Alternate ads give you opportunity to monetize from other resources instead of wasting clicks on PASs.

2. Get rid of “Advertise on this site”

The default AdSense displays “Ads by Google” link and “Advertise on this site” link. When users click “Advertise on this site”, it goes to a sign-up page on Google called “Onsite Advertiser Sign-up”. It is kind of distracting to visitors.

You don’t get paid a referral fee for every advertiser you sign up since Onsite Advertiser Sign-up is separate from the AdSense referrals feature. However, you should see a revenue benefit from new advertisers signing up to display ads on your site, as greater competition for your ad space will lead to higher potential earnings for you. In this case, it wouldn’t help profitability for most of blog sites.

To get ride of it, login to Google AdSense account, go to “My Account” tab, select “Account Settings”, click “edit” for Onsite Advertiser Sign-Up, uncheck “Include me in Onsite Advertiser Sign-Up” for Subscription, then Save Changes. After that, the “Advertise on this site” will disappear.

3. Use image ads

The default AdSense ads display both text and images. You can specify a ad to show as image ads only. Image ads perform better on certain locations such as in the header. I suggest to put an 468×60 image ads in the header on the right hand side. You may select the “image only” option when generating the scripts, or edit the code thereafter. For example, google_ad_type = “text_image” displays mixed ads, but google_ad_type = “image” shows image only.

Only AdSense on certain sizes have the image-ads-only option.

4. Customize border and colors

Make the style of border and text/link colors match your site, which makes AdSense blend into your site better. It is said this would improve click-through rate.

5. Beautify Adsense appearance

One of the decoration features provided by AdSense is to set the ads panel with round corner. The script code to add round corner is like:
google_ui_features = “rc:10″
This makes the ads more standout and attractive, thus encouraging clicking.

    This is a very useful tip I did know before. I long wanted to get rid of the extra annoy link but never got chance to figure it out. Thanks!

    A couple of other things to note:

    - Make sure that your larger ads appear above the fold(fold being the point on the screen where you can no longer see and have to scroll down)

    - Add images close to your ads(but not directly next to or on top as this will violate Google’s TOS) this will draw the viewers attention to the ads better.

    - Use a 3 column WP theme as this gives you move flexibility for placing ads in the right spots and a lot of times the 3 column themes have nice widgets that have Google code embedded in them already.

    I have implemented a few on my site and it’s doing very well in Google’s rankings and in turn is making it more profitable!
